‘Xtra-delightful, Xtra-large, Xtra-delicious’ were some of the comments of visibly elated attendees of SAMI’s monthly ‘Xtracare’ Sickle Cell Free Clinic when she held her 2018 End of the Year party on Sat. 15th December, 2018.
Now in her fifth year, the ‘Xtracare’ clinic – one of the flagship programs of Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) – has brought a new lease of life to indigent persons who live with sickle cell disorder and their caregivers on a monthly basis.
The number keep swelling every month as hundreds of individuals have taken advantage of medical doctors’ consultation, counselling and drugs, all provided at no cost to the beneficiaries. Where possible, the program has also engendered the referrals of some individuals to hospitals for further, comprehensive medical care and treatment.
Speaking at the event, Toyin Adesola, Executive Director of Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) shared stories of how she started the clinic from savings from her business and how it has grown with the support of friends, family and some corporate organizations. She encouraged the beneficiaries to take their health and wellness seriously.
At the end-of-the-year party, a lot of giveaways like food items, school bags, and stationeries were handed out to the children, while there were auction sales of traditional wears for youths and adults.
