2018 was a great year for us at Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI), here’s a brief into our activities in the course of the year.
10 Hearty Cheers to SAMI – Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative celebrated her 10th year anniversary with a private dinner/fundraising event.
#INoBeWaste trended – SAMI’s social media campaign to commemorate Sickle Cell Awareness Month in September enjoyed massive support.
‘Touch a Cell with Toyin & the Gang’ debuted on radio – The first season of the enlightening show ran successfully every Thursday at 4.30pm on Eko. 89.7FM in the last quarter of the year.
Red Umbrella Walk – The annual walk which commemorate World Sickle Cell Day held on Saturday 16th June, 2018 with the support of the Coalition of Sickle Cell NGOs in Lagos.
SAMI Xtracare – The SAMI’s monthly Xtracare Sickle Cell Free Clinic consistently held third Saturday of every month in the year. The program also witnessed a tremendous rise in the number of its beneficiaries.
#ZeroToHero2018 – The youth arm of Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) held the second edition of her thought-provoking ad enlightening Zero to Hero conference. Fela Bank-Olemoh, Special Adviser on Education to the Lagos State Governor delivering the keynote address.
CSS Hangout – It was a time of knowledge sharing, networking, music and dance as the youths and young adults of SAMI had fun on the sandy beaches of Kids Beach Garden, Lekki, Lagos to mark the end-of-year activities for the youth group.
Bake ‘N’ Grill Charity Fair – The fun-filled atmosphere of the event held on 26th May provided a wonderful opportunity to create awareness and raise support for sickle cell disorder.
#SMW2018 – SAMI co-hosted ‘What’s Your Story – The Power of Storytelling to Drive Social Change’, a special panel discussion in the course of the popular Social Media Week Lagos activities. The panel which had Toyin Adesola, Niniola Soleye, Joel Benson, Wana Udobang, Remi Owadokun was moderated by Arit Ekpo of Menoword Media.
SAMI educates Makoko – With support of three other NGOs, SAMI reached Makoko community, a sprawling slum in Lagos with her health awareness drive. The outreach also involved free medical tests like genotype, blood pressure and Hepatitis B tests.
Award-winning SAMI – SAMI bagged the 2017 Runway Jazz Humanitarian Award (Not for Profit category). The award won on 29th May was presented to Toyin Adesola, Executive Director, SAMI by Mrs. Dolapo Osinbajo, wife of the Vice President.
Special 2018 End of the Year party for children – ‘Xtra-delightful, Xtra-large, Xtra-delicious’ were some of the comments of visibly elated children at the 2018 End of the Year party held on Sat. 15th December, 2018.
