#INOBEWASTE TAKES SOCIAL MEDIA BY STORM
September of every year is celebrated world over as the Sickle Cell Awareness Month. This year, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) focused its awareness efforts on the disorder using the much-publicized #INoBeWaste hashtag.
This was against the backdrop of the nationally televised gaffe by a certain Prof. Cyril Otoikhian on popular TV show, “Your View” in commemoration of World Sickle Cell Day, Professor Otoikhian during an interview session on the program on 20th June, 2018 had remarked that: ‘investing in a sickle celled child is like loading your money into a sachet and you are in a moving car, you throw the money away. Sickle cell disease is a genetic disorder. I am a professor of Genetics and we know right that genetic disorder are not reversible’ to the ire and angst of the people living with sickle cell disorder, their caregivers, health professionals, and the general public.
Instead of venting negative energy, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) placed the hashtag #INoBeWaste on the social media throughout the month with the aim of ‘sensitizing the public especially families, homes and persons living with sickle cell who might have been affected negatively by the statement of the professor.’
The hashtag enjoyed massive support with retweets, reposts, and shares on various social media platforms as many persons living with sickle cell disorder latched onto the opportunity to share their success stories in spite and because of the said ‘irreversible genetic disorder.’
At the end of the month, the #INoBeWaste campaign leaped into top ten trending topics on social media platforms like Twitter.
