RED UMBRELLA WALK
June 19 is the World sickle cell day and it is celebrated all over the world in various unique ways.
Nigeria has developed the tradition of having a walk to commemorate the day and to raise awareness for the Sickle Cell Disorder and celebrate milestones crossed, the walk is called “Red Umbrella Walk”. The theme of this year 2018 walk was “SCDWALK4HOPE”, It was held on the 16th of June and it commenced at the Teslim Balogun stadium at 9 am, over one thousand people as well as 13 sickle cell Non-governmental organizations and their beneficiaries took part in the walk.
An ambulance, vehicles carrying water and volunteers including Skaters distributing flyers were also part of the walk. They walked through Itire road, to Ogunlano drive, all the way to Masha and then back to Teslim Balogun Stadium. Upon arriving at the stadium at around 2 pm, there was a brief talk to introduce the NGO’s and acknowledge guests and sponsors including Fidelity bank who was the main sponsor of the whole event. It was really an exciting day, food and drinks were distributed, children dancers performed and music was played, Taxify also gave out Promo rides to and from the takes off point.
Different personalities came along for the ride including Desmond Elliot and CeeCee, media house which includes TVC , LTV and Supersports covered the whole event.
June 16th really turned out to be a really fun day. The walk really brought around various people from all over, including those living with the sickle cell disorder and those who merely wanted to advocate for the cause, it was really a day to remember.
