SAMI AND THE COALITION OF NGOS COMMEMORATE 2018 WORLD SICKLE CELL AWARENESS DAY WITH CHARITY WALK

As part of efforts to deepen the awareness for sickle cell disorder, the Sickle Cell Advocacy Management Initiative (SAMI), a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) and the coalition of  NGOs in Lagos joined the rest of the world to mark this year’s awareness campaign with a charity walk on the theme “SCD: A Walk for Hope”.

The event tagged ‘Red Umbrella Charity Walk’  holds Sat 16th June is created to commemorate the June 19th World Sickle Cell Day. Nigeria will once again join the rest of the world to commemorate the 2018 World Sickle Cell Day as designated by the United Nations to draw attention and create necessary awareness to the problems posed by sickle cell disorder.

Ms Toyin Adesola, Founder/ Executive Director, Sickle Cell Advocacy Management Initiative (SAMI)  and Chairperson of the coalition has  said that, “the annual walk brings together people from all works of life to advocate the recognition of the disorder as a major public health problem in Nigeria, where 1-in-4 people are healthy carriers of the sickle cell gene and over 150,000 children are born annually with symptomatic sickle cell anemia”.

“SAMI over the years has provided social support to people living with sickle cell by giving support through a number of ways such as XTRA CARE, a free medical clinic where we provide free medical consultations and administer free drugs to underprivileged children and adults with the disorder. We also visit schools with our special program called ‘Touch a Call Dance-a-Thon’ educating children on basic health tips and we carry out free genotype test for them to know their blood group”, she said.

Adding further, Ms Adesola disclosed that the organisation has identified some indigent Nigerians who live with sickle cell and help them to pay their house rents, children’s school fees among other things to make them live more comfortably. “We also empower people living with sickle cell through vocational training and provision of equipment to enable them to start their own businesses and earn a livelihood”.

The Red Umbrella Charity Walk is an annual event that helps to deepen awareness about Sickle Cell Disorder. Through the campaign, people are given proper education on how to identify individuals with the disorder, given tips on how to manage the conditions and crisis that occur to them.

The Coalition of Sickle Cell NGOs in Lagos State comprises Sickle Cell Foundation Nigeria, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI), CrimsonBow Sickle Cell Initiative, Genotype Foundation, Tony May Foundation, Sickle Cell Aid Foundation (SCAF), Couple and Kids Initiative, Noah’s Ark Foundation, Soulage Foundation ,  Nirvana Initiative and others.
