It was a shock to the entire board, staff, volunteers and beneficiaries of SAMI when we received the news of the demise of Banke Alawaye, an esteemed advisory member of the SAMI non-profit board, in only the first week of resumption in the New Year 2021. Banke had just been a guest at the Touch a Cell Online Show middle of December, sharing words of wisdom to sickle cell warriors
Motivation to work among the staff hit rock bottom through the week. Banke was truly an influence on the work. A management staff said ‘it is this use of the word – was – that I find odd for someone that we worked closely on various projects.
But it’s true!
God has called His angel home!
‘The Warrior within’ is resting in Abraham’s bosom!
The SAMI team were at the service of songs and other funeral activities held in honour of Banke Alawaye, both physically and virtually. We also delivered a letter of condolence to the Alawaye family residence.
Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative in honour of Ms Alawaye conducted a night of tribute on the platform, ZOOM, to celebrate her life on the 21st January 2021. The entire SAMI family, the sickle cell community, the Alawaye’s, the Shonibare’s, and friends showered encomiums at the event in memory of our dearly beloved Banke.
It is worthy of note that Banke blessed our world with the gift of her autobiography ‘The Warrior Within’ on her 50th birthday last year. The book is available for purchase on Amazon at https://bit.ly/warriorwithinbybanke
Words cannot suffice, Banke will be sorely missed. We pray that God will grant the entire family of Alawaye and Shonibare the fortitude to bear the loss.
