As part of efforts to educate the society especially the disadvantaged community on issues dealing with health and sickle cell disorder, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management initiative in collaboration with CrimsonBow Sickle cell Initiative, Nirvana Initiative and Kindle Africa Initiative organised an awareness outreach.
And so it was despite the heavy downpour that heralded the day, the health outreach was held 23rd of June 2018, with the aim of sensitizing the community on the sickle cell disorder while also enlightening them on how to care for a person living with sickle cell disorder. Various tests were carried out, such as genotype tests to enable participants to know their genotype, Hepatitis B surface and Blood pressure tests.
Doctors were also at hand to share on topics ranging from basic health care and hygiene which was taken by Dr Akin Odubitan ( a medical educationist) and sickle cell disorder taking by a representative of Crimson Bow Initiative. Materials such as mosquito nets, bathing soaps, water bottles, sanitary pads and shirts were also available for those who attended.
Although over 200 guests were initially expected to attend, however, due to the continuous downpour, only about 70 guests were able to make it. The program started early in the morning and lasted until the early afternoon, with all attendees appreciative of our presence and requesting we return another time.
