SICKLE CELL AWARENESS MONTH: The SAMI Way – Sickle Cell Advocacy & Management Initiative


The month of September widely adjudged as Sickle Cell Awareness Month. A month said to bring about awareness to the challenges of sickle cell disease. It was a beehive of activities for us at Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) focusing on awareness and educational events.  Right from the first to last day of the month -onsite, online, digital and conventional media, English and local languages like Hausa, Igbo, Pidgin, Yoruba,  as a nongovernmental organization focus on reducing the effects of sickle cell in the society, we put out a message of advocacy and awareness about sickle cell.


Some of the events and programs we held were:

Sickle cell management and awareness talks with the attendees of our free medical XTRACARE clinic (thrice in a week, under social distancing)

Our youth arm, Club Still Standing’s Advocates Battle – ‘Should warriors ever try dating each other’ was a platform to reach the youth demographics (online platform)

Media tour in radio and television stations, featuring our ED Toyin Adesola on the Morning Show at TVC, and SAMI Team members visiting Metro FM, Jordan FM, Eko FM, Radio Lagos, Max FM, Star FM, Faaji FM, TVC

Our primetime Touch A Cell Radio show which holds every Wednesday on Star 101.5FM at 7.00 pm helped us reach the listening audience in homes.

#TogetherWeCan campaign done in partnership with two other sickle cell NGOs, Dr Sickle Cell and COAG Initiative trended sickle cell across various social media platforms. It enjoyed the support of a couple of influencers like the comedian, Miss Maryam Apaokagi aka Taaooma
