Shocking it was when the news of the passing of Oluwatosin ‘Tosyn’ Bucknor-Boyer filtered across the social media on Tuesday, 20th November, 2018. The entertainer cum media personality was said to have been found dead in her home the previous night by her beloved husband.

While breaking the news via her Instagram post, the sister of the deceased Olufunke Bucknor-Obruthe wrote: “My heart is heavy, but in all things we give thanks to God. My darling sister and bestoTosyn passed away last night due to complications from sickle cell. Love you.”

The news of the demise of the illustrious ‘Area Mama’ and ‘Voice of Lagos’ was a rude shock to friends, fans, media colleagues, artistes, alumni of her alma mater, sickle cell community, notable personalities and the general public as they took to both social media and conventional media to express their grief and paid glowing tributes to her memory.

The renowned singer, writer, and actress became very popular on the airwaves with her morning show which she anchored for many years on Top 90.9FM before she left for Inspiration 92.3FM. She had earlier worked with other radio stations. The winner of numerous awards who featured in movies such as Dazzling Mirage, Now we are married and Tinsel is famed to have popularised slangs such as ‘Guguru Morning Lagos’ and ‘Top of the morning’.

The founder of ‘These Genes Project,’ who lived with the sickle cell disorder herself, was a huge supporter of the activities of Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative (SAMI) since 2009. Commenting on her passing on her Facebook wall, Toyin Adesola, Executive Director and Founder of SAMI stated: I woke up this morning to a call, not expecting to hear the news I heard. Even then I was hoping it’s one of those stupid fake news people try to create because I just could not believe it’s true. In fact, I still don’t want to believe it’s true. But as each tribute comes in I come to my reality that it is. That you left us too soon. I remember chatting you up IG planning to call you but I could not get through at the time not knowing that was the last time. My darling Aburo Tosyn, you are indeed an epitome of what a warrior should be. Full of life and bent on achieving all you wanted. You did this and more. You touched people’s lives and inspired many. Words fail but I knew I would do you a disservice if I didn’t say anything. My prayer is that the Lord will comfort your hubby, Funke and the family that they might have strength in him at this time. Sun re o Tosyn Bucknor (Area Mama, Voice of Lagos, Contradiction, Speech Girl). You fought a good fight. You have gone to a better place.”
