Health nonprofit, Sickle Cell Advocacy and Management Initiative SAMI joined family, friends, and well-wishers of late Banke Alawaye on Monday, 12th January 2026 to commemorate the 5th Memorial in a solemn yet impactful tribute to the life and legacy of the late warrior and phenomenal woman.
The memorial service which was held at the Church of Assumption, Lagos, was followed by prayers at The Vaults and Gardens, Ikoyi. Despite falling on a weekday, the event recorded a good turnout, underscoring the far-reaching influence and goodwill that Banke Alawaye built during her lifetime.

Staff of SAMI, Yomi Oyelami and Tobi Olaitan, alongside SAMI Board Member, Fola Akinrinlola described the gathering as both reflective and inspiring, noting ongoing efforts to maintain a relationship with the deceased’s family. While plans for a proposed Foundation in her honour are yet to commence, contact has been established with her sister, Tunji and daughter with commitments to remain engaged and supportive of future initiatives.
Participants at the Memorial observed that the turnout reinforced the enduring value of a life lived with impact and the belief that kindness and purpose leave lasting impressions well beyond a lifetime.
